Woman stopped tow truck driver from taking her SUV at gunpoint, then stole his tow truck: Police

A 27-year-old woman in Tennessee has been arrested after she allegedly robbed a tow truck driver at gunpoint, stopping him while he was in the middle of taking her SUV and then stealing his vehicle. Kelsey Green was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of felony aggravated robbery, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident took place on the evening of Nov. 24, 2024, outside of an apartment complex in the 1700 block of Chancery Street. The driver told investigators that at about 6:50 p.m. he was outside of the address and preparing to tow a 2018 GMC Terrain with Tennessee license plates. The driver said he stood outside of the SUV and took several photographs of the vehicle before starting the process of lifting the car.

As he was lifting the SUV, the driver said a woman “who appeared to be armed with a gun” got into the driver’s seat of his tow truck, a 2018 Dodge Ram 5500. The woman — who police later identified as Green — ordered the driver to back away from the tow truck, which he did.

Green allegedly lowered her own SUV from the tow truck and back onto the ground. She remained behind the wheel of the tow truck and drove away, police said. A second woman is then believed to have gotten into the GMC that was being towed, driving that car away from the scene as well.

Police said that Green stopped a short while later and abandoned the tow truck near the entrance of the apartment complex before fleeing in the GMC with the other female.

Identifying Green as the prime suspect did not take long, as police said the robbery was caught on tape by the apartment complex’s surveillance cameras as well as an in-car camera that was installed inside of the tow truck.

Additionally, investigators said that Green was the registered owner of the 2018 GMC.

The tow truck driver provided the department’s Violent Crimes Unit with a statement on Nov. 25, before positively identifying Green as the perpetrator from a six-person lineup.

Green was booked into the Shelby County Jail and released after posting bond of $75,000. She is currently scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. on Thursday, records show.
