A Florida man was charged with manslaughter after a vacationer fell off a golf cart he was driving, allegedly while under the influence, and died of her injuries.
Richard Allen Keil, 58, was arrested following an incident on March 9 at the retirement community The Villages, involving a 60-year-old woman from Illinois. Keil was driving a golf cart around a suburban neighborhood just before 1 a.m. with the unnamed woman as his passenger, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports obtained by WKMG, a local CBS affiliate. When he abruptly swerved to avoid a parked vehicle, the woman fell off the cart and sustained serious injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Upon further investigation, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol determined that Keil was allegedly under the influence while he was operating the golf cart. He was charged with DUI vehicular manslaughter and booked into the Sumter County Detention Center.

On March 10, a judge set Keil’s bond at $50,000, which he posted. He was released from custody the same day. It is not clear when his next court date will be.
According to reporting by local news outlet Villages-News.com, Keil’s wife passed away on Dec. 29, 2024. Keil had reportedly written a number of social media posts expressing his grief over his wife. The two had relocated from New Jersey to Florida in 2015 after she retired.
