Who is Luke Deeley?

Luke Deeley was a student at the University of South Wales when he attacked June Fox-Roberts in her own home on November 2021.

The illustration student brutally attacked and then decapitated the mother-of-three, before removing her limbs and placing them in a plastic bag.

The paranoid schizophrenic, who was reportedly obsessed with ‘Satan and demons,’ carried out the murder of June ten days after leaving his student accommodation.

He moved into the shared house in September 2021, but the other students reportedly found his behaviour ‘challenging’.

One complaint came after he called a female fellow student a ‘b****’ and a ‘c***’ and threw water over her, which led to him leaving the property without taking his belongings in November 2021.

In a subsequent search of the room, police found ‘demonic drawings’ he had

‘When a subsequent search of that room by police took place a quantity of artwork drawn by the defendant, demonic in nature, were recovered,’ the prosecution John Hipkin KC revealed to Newport Crown Court at Deeley’s trial.

After moving out, Deely was caught on CCTV on numerous occasions and in November 18, 2021 he was seen near the university campus in Treforest trying various doors.

Deeley was first prescribed anti-psychotic medication after he was admitted for an ‘acute psychotic episode’ in March 2019.

In July 2021 his parents contacted the community mental health team with concerns, particularly his lack of sleep and constant pacing.

As a result Deeley took place with a consultant psychiatrist and social worker, who he told he had weaned himself off the medicine. The psychiatrist then gave him an emergency supply.

What did Luke Deeley do to June Fox-Roberts?

On November 21, 2021, Luke entered the home of great-grandmother June Fox-Roberts where she had lived since 1985.

The victim lived in Llantwit Fardre, Wales and worked as an IT trainer, there was no evidence to suggest she knew the defendant.

Deeley let himself into the property and bludgeoned June, then decapitated her with an axe, chopped up her limbs and put them into plastic bags.

He was also armed with a chainsaw, Mr Hipkins told the trial that a forensic reconstruction of the killing showed a chainsaw covered in blood.

The weapon was ‘not used in the dismemberment process,’ however.

Deeley fled the premises and was later seen at 2:20pm at an industrial estate, around this time June’s daughter, Abigail Sheppard, and friend Pamela Lovatt became concerned for her after being unable to contact her and made the ‘gruesome discovery’ of her body.

CCTV footage was played to the court of Deeley talking and singing to himself while wrapped in a blanket. He spent the night sleeping in a trailer

A number of victim personal statements were read to the court, including one from Ms Sheppard who said her ‘life imploded’ on the day her mother was killed.

Where is Luke Deeley now?

As of 2023, Deeley has been detained indefinitely in a psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act.

Deeley was arrested two days after June’s death and told police that he had been instructed to kill someone by a ‘higher power’.

In March 2023, he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility which was accepted by prosecution.

The court later heard that Deeley had the ‘delusional belief’ that a group of people were ‘out to get him’.

After the sentencing, June’s family released a statement, saying that their ‘world imploded’ after she was taken from them in a ‘horrific way’.

They described June as a ‘vibrant’, ‘hardworking’, and ‘very resilient’ woman, who ‘adored’ her family.

Their statement continued: ‘June was not afraid of death, but she wanted to die peacefully with her family around her and Luke stole that right from her and all of us when he took her life years before her natural time.’
