A New Orleans man is fighting for his life after he was ruthlessly beaten near the French Quarter because he accidentally stepped on another man’s shoe, according to police.
The man, identified by his family as Scott Wagner, was walking home from work at a local seafood restaurant when he went to a music club on Sept. 24. He left the club when he stepped on the man’s shoe as he was walking by, sparking the assault.
“The perpetrator turned around, approached the victim from behind and punched him one time, causing him to fall,” New Orleans Police said. “The perpetrator then punches the victim two more times from behind, causing the victim to lose consciousness.”
NOPD said the suspect, along with an accomplice, then walked away. Wagner has been in the hospital and has yet to regain consciousness, his family told local CBS affiliate WWL.
Wagner’s sister Gloria Cranmer said he suffered a traumatic brain injury.
“We don’t even know if he’s gonna make it,” she said.

No arrests have been made. New Orleans police released a surveillance photo of the suspects to the public in hopes of obtaining information that leads to an arrest.
Cranmer told WWL her brother moved to New Orleans from his native Pittsburgh about two years ago. He often told relatives how much he loved the city.
“It’s a horrible thing to see him like this, and we would like some answers,” she said.
His family made the long trek from Pittsburgh to New Orleans after they learned of his injuries. They said they’ve been trying to get ahold of NOPD to no avail, but the agency said it wasn’t able to get contacts from Wagner because of his unconscious state. Police said after the WWL story aired, it would contact the family.
“We want to know who did this [and] why,” Cranmer said.
Anyone with information was asked to notify NOPD Eighth District Persons Crimes Detective John Huntington at 504-658-6080.
