Her son’s body was found dead in a cemetery in 1999, his identity was discovered in 2019, and she was indicted in 2022.
Georgia woman Teresa Black heads to trial on charges including two counts of felony murder, two counts of cruelty to children, aggravated assault, and concealing the death of another. The case remained cold for 23 years, until facial reconstruction aided in the identification of 6-year-old William Dashawn Hamilton.

Hamilton’s decomposing body was found in a wooded area near a church cemetery in DeKalb County back in 1999. According to the defendant’s indictment, she is accused of causing her son’s death by drugging him and striking him over the head. This is not the first death Black is linked to, as North Carolina court records show she was convicted of manslaughter in 1994.
The now 46-year-old was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona for the death of her son after law enforcement received a tip from Black’s former neighbor. Ava from North Carolina recognized the boy as the son of her previous neighbor and recalled Black returning home without him or an explanation as to where he was.
The trial is slated to last two weeks.
