Utah Family Killed in Tragic Murder-Suicide Were Refugees from Ethnic Cleansing in Myanmar

Family members have identified the family killed in an apparent murder suicide over the weekend as a refugee from Myanmar and her children.

West Valley City police believe the husband, 42-year-old Dae Reh, shot and killed his 38-year-old wife, Bu Meh, and three of their children before killing himself.

A 17-year-old son survived the shooting but was badly wounded with a severe brain injury, police said.

Family members identified the children as 11-year-old boy Boe Reh and 8- and 2-year-old daughters Kristina Ree and Nyay Meh. The surviving boy was identified as Sha Reh.

Relatives said that Bu Meh fled what they described as ethnic cleansing of Myanmar’s Karenni minority around 10 years ago. They lived in a refugee camp in Thailand before coming to the United States “with little more than the clothing on their backs,” a family statement said.

West Valley Police released the statement on behalf of the family.

The family called the teen “our 17-year-old hero” and said he has “a long and complex road to recovery.” A GoFundMe has been set up to help with his recovery.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, police were initially called to the home by a family member on Sunday but found no reason to break in when no one answered the door. Instead, they peeked in windows and talked to neighbors, then left. Two days later, when Bu Meh didn’t show up at work, the same family member returned to the home and entered the garage, finding the wounded teen.

Police then breached the home and found the other family members, with a handgun beneath the father’s body. Police said they family had no history of domestic violence calls and they are still trying to determine a motive.
