College Instructor Found Dead in Lake Had Air in Lungs, Cops Reveal as Search for Missing Fiancé Continues

Georgia police said a man who vanished with his fiancée last month was found dead on Sunday.

WANF reported that Gary Jones’ body was found in Lake Oconee, where he was last seen boating with Joycelyn Wilson, 49, on February 8. Wilson’s body was found floating on the lake on February 9, and Jones remained unaccounted for up until Sunday, March 9.

The boat Jones, 50, and Wilson were on was discovered circling the lake. Game wardens started searching for the pair, as witnesses said there were two people on the boat.

Jones’ wallet was found on the boat, while his shoes had washed ashore.

On February 8, Jones drove his boat to a hotel near the lake where he and Wilson were staying. They planned to spend the night at The Lodge on Lake Oconee, but they vanished about 90 minutes into their boating excursion, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told WANF that they had zeroed in on a 2- to 3-acre area in the lake.

Volunteer diver Keith Cormican told WSB-TV that he and his team, Bruce’s Legacy, located Jones’ body 100 yards from where Wilson was found weeks earlier. Cormican said sonar was used to find Jones’ body — which was in a heavily wooded area, about 45 feet underwater.

“It was a little further- closer to shore than you know, than I would’ve suspected based on the boat activity. So it’s a little, little bit different area than you know, might expect based on the information,” Cormican told WMAZ.

Officials previously said that Jones had air in her lungs, explaining why she was found floating in the lake. They also claimed she was holding her phone. Reports indicated that her death is being treated as an active investigation, not a simple drowning. Her cause of death remains undisclosed.

Sills told WMAZ that Jones will undergo an autopsy before his body his turned over to his family.
