Spit on Sidewalk Leads to Arrest in 36-Year-Old Cold Case Murder of Massachusetts Woman

A routine traffic stop in Virginia Beach resulted in the fatal shooting of two police officers.

On Friday night, Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reece were shot and killed during a traffic stop, according to the Virginia Beach Police Department.

NBC Washington reported that Girvin and Reece stopped a vehicle for expired plates. An argument ensued between the suspect and the officers when they requested him to exit the vehicle. As the suspect, John McCoy III, 42, exited his vehicle, he pulled out a gun and began shooting at both Girvin and Reece.

The entire incident was captured on the officers’ body cameras. Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate described the video as “horrific.”

“The officers, Girvin and Reece, were dedicated, determined peace officers and public servants,” Neudigate said. “They had stellar reputations in our department, and their work ethic was beyond reproach. We asked them to go out into this community and keep us safe from evil. And last night, evil found them. That sacrifice is a painful reminder of the dangers our officers face.”

Officers later located McCoy suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in a shed. The fatal shot is believed to have been self-inflicted.

McCoy was a convicted felon, and due to his 2009 felony conviction, he could face additional charges for being in possession of a firearm.

The police department asks for patience as they conduct a thorough investigation while they “grieve the loss of their own.”
