A former gang leader from Southern California entered a not guilty plea on Thursday for the drive-by shooting that led to Tupac Shakur’s death in 1996 in Las Vegas. Duane Keith ‘Keffe D’ Davis, the sole survivor from the car involved in the shooting and the only individual ever charged in the case, appeared in restraints before Clark County District Judge Tierra Jones. Special public defenders Robert Arroyo and Charles Cano stood in for Davis at the hearing.
Davis was denied his choice of defense attorney, Ross Goodman, who had criticized the prosecution’s lack of witnesses and evidence for the 27-year-old murder case. In court, dressed in navy jail clothes, Davis confirmed his college attendance, sobriety, and awareness of the murder charge.

Tupac Shakur, hailed as one of the ‘most influential rappers of all time,’ was fatally shot in a Las Vegas drive-by on September 13, 1996, at age 25. Sixty-year-old Davis, a Compton, California native, was arrested on September 29 in Henderson, sparking fresh interest in the long-unsolved hip-hop mystery. Held without bail, Davis did not testify before the indicting grand jury and has refused to speak with the press from jail.
Davis is accused of providing the gun in the drive-by that killed Shakur and injured Marion ‘Suge’ Knight in Las Vegas. Shakur died at 25, a week after the incident. Knight, 58, serving a 28-year term for a separate case, hasn’t commented on Davis’ arrest. The prosecution suggests the murder was part of an East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry involving Davis’ Crips affiliation.
Prosecutors relayed to the grand jury that the September 7, 1996, Las Vegas shooting was a response to an earlier fight involving Shakur and Davis’ nephew at a casino. Davis reportedly incriminated himself during several interviews and in his 2019 autobiography, detailing his role in the Crips. He admits to acquiring a .40-caliber handgun and passing it to his gang member nephew in a Cadillac, without naming the actual shooter.
At 22, Anderson, denied any part in Shakur’s murder and was shot dead in Compton two years later. All other passengers of the Cadillac have since died. Davis confessed in his book that in 2010 he disclosed details about the Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. murders to avoid prosecution and life sentences for himself and his gang associates.
