The Australian city robbed more than any other over the Christmas period has been revealed, while Queensland emerged as the worst state for festive season burglaries.
Townsville had a higher rate of home break-ins over November and December than any other Australian city, according to insurer Budget Direct, with 37 burglaries per 10,000 people.
The data, compiled from crime reports, captured which towns, cities and states have the most home robberies while Aussies move into holiday mode.

The insurer also revealed the one thing you should never, when you go away – leave a spare key outside.
According to official Townsville police statistics, the crime rate in the unofficial North Queensland capital have been steadily climbing over the past two decades.
The rate of offences committed grew by over 52 per cent between 2001 and 2022 in Townsville.

Queensland had far more break-ins than any other Australian state too, with 4,677 in 2021.
Victoria was second with 3,734 and New South Wales third with 3,050.

Budget Direct revealed several tips to protect your home from break-ins, including never leaving a spare key hidden outside.
‘If you go away, please don’t leave a spare key under the doormat or pot plant,’ the insurer says on its website.

The Australian town with the worst crime rates over all is Alice Springs, according to a global database.
It was the 17th worst town on earth for crime, according to Numbeo’s current crime index.
Rockhampton was the second worst Australian town, coming in at 38th globally, while Cairns, Darwin and Townsville all made the top 100.
Another Queensland town, Toowoomba, was 103rd.
The data on home break-ins was crunched by Research House Aira, from Australian crime reports submitted between November and December in 2020.
