Police in North Carolina are investigating after a toddler somehow got away from a babysitter and drowned in a backyard pool.

Brandy Parker, mother of 2-year-old Andres Zamora, told WRAL that her 13-year-old daughter found the boy in the pool.

A call at 5 p.m. brought the news.

“She said, ‘I’m sorry. He’s been in the pool for 20 minutes,’” Parker said. “I dropped to my knees and started crying.”

Parker said she left Andres and her two daughters in the care of a longtime family friend while she was at work.

Police said they were awaiting autopsy results before deciding if charges are warranted.

Parker said it was the family’s second devastating loss this summer. A newborn died last month from heart failure.

She said her remaining four children are struggling.

[My daughter’s] walking around calling for her brother, looking for brother. She’s never going to see her brother again,” said Parker.
