A 43-year-old man in Texas has been arrested and accused of nearly killing a new father who was shopping for his infant son on Black Friday, allegedly stabbing the victim in the neck with a pair of scissors inside of a Target bathroom.
Robert Weldon Fields was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the attack on Angel Perez Luna, records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Officers with the Dallas Police Department at about 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 29, responded to a Dallas-area Target store in 2400 block of South Haskell Avenue regarding a reported stabbing, Dallas Fox affiliate KDFW reported. First responders located the victim inside of the store and immediately transported him to Baylor Scott & White Hospital for treatment.
The suspect — later identified as Fields — had fled the scene before authorities arrived.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by KDFW, surveillance footage from inside of the store showed Fields entering the men’s bathroom at about 10:34 a.m. and running out of the bathroom at about 11:19 a.m.
A witness told police that he entered the same bathroom at about 11 a.m. and heard Fields say, “Today, I’m going to commit a crime,” Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA reported.
About 10 minutes after the witness left the bathroom, Perez Luna entered the bathroom and was stabbed.
In an interview with police, Perez Luna said that when he entered the bathroom, Fields was seated on one of the sinks and appeared to be mumbling to himself. Perez Luna said he washed his hands and began walking out of the bathroom, which is when Fields allegedly pounced and stabbed him in the neck with a pair of scissors.
Perez Luna reportedly said that he attempted to chase after the fleeing Fields, but collapsed to the ground just outside of the bathroom.
Fields remained on the run for three days until police on Dec. 2 spotted a man who matched Fields’ description “standing and dancing” at a nearby DART rail station, police wrote in the warrant. He was taken into custody after attempting to get on the DART rail without paying the fare and transported to Dallas Police Headquarters for questioning.
In a post-Miranda interview, Fields initially denied having anything to do with the attack, allegedly saying, “If I had stabbed him, he would be dead.” He then added, “I was surprised that he survived,” per the warrant. The arresting officers also noted that Fields appeared to be wearing the same clothing he had on during the alleged stabbing.
Perez Luna’s partner, Nicole Hernandez, told KDFW that Perez Luna was in critical condition following the attack, but was getting better after having two surgeries.
“They say it’s a miracle he’s here with us,” Hernandez told the station. “That he made it to the hospital.”
Fields is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bond.
