A 68-year-old Florida woman allegedly beat her 96-year-old mother and failed to feed her or change her diapers.
Court records show Elizabeth Benavides is facing a charge of negligence with physical harm to an elderly person. Hialeah police arrested her on Saturday and took her to the Miami-Dade County Jail where she has since posted a $15,000 bond. An arrest affidavit obtained by Miami NBC affiliate WTVJ said the victim would go for hours without eating and tenants that lived in her building would feed her and change her diapers because Benavides wouldn’t do it.
The tenants also would reportedly hear the victim screaming at night and they would later find bruises on the victim. Benavides claimed that her mother was injured during a fall two weeks ago but neighbors had a video where the victim told them it was her daughter who hit her, the affidavit reportedly said. Benavides also allegedly gave the victim high doses of sleeping medications. Other family members called police after finding her with bruises and paramedics took the victim to the hospital where she is recovering, her grandson Allesandro said.
“This does not surprise me, because I suspected it. There were signs of what was happening, but I do not want to share the details at this time because there is an active investigation,” he told the TV station.
The victim reportedly told cops that her daughter would become upset when she woke up in the middle of the night but did not admit it was her daughter who caused her injuries. Benavides has been caring for her mother since 2022.
Her next court hearing is scheduled for June 24.
