A man has been charged almost a week after a fatal hit-and-run in south London. 

Wahib Zahid, 19, from Dagenham was arrested by detectives on Thursday following the collision in the early hours of Sunday morning on Clapham High Street, which left a 27-year-old man dead. 

Zahid was charged last night on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. 

He is expected to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court later today. 

According to the Met Police, they received an emergency call at 2.41am on Sunday, July 9, claiming a pedestrian had been struck by a car on Clapham High Street.

Emergency services including police officers, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service battled to save the pedestrian’s life, but he was declared dead a short time later. 

The car failed to stop  at the scene of the collision. 

The victim’s identity has not yet been officially confirmed, but specialist officers have informed his next of kin. 

The investigation is been led by specialist officers from with in the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command. 

Anyone who has information about the incident, or dashcam/cctv/mobile phone footage of the smash is asked to call police on 101 citing the reference CAD 1040/09Jul.
