Teenager, 18, dies after falling from a moving car bonnet in Manchester suburb – as driver, 18, is arrested

A teenager died after falling from the bonnet of a moving car – allegedly prompting the driver to flee the scene.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has launched an investigation after the 18-year-old man was found on Booth Road, Altrincham on the morning of Saturday August 12.

Detectives say he was found with ‘serious injuries’ at around 5am and died at the scene, despite the best efforts of medics working to save him.

Subsequent enquiries have determined that he had climbed onto the bonnet of a grey Ford Ka and was driven across the junction of Dunham Road onto Booth Road in the Manchester suburb.

He then fell from the front of the car, sustaining the fatal injuries, before the driver allegedly fled the scene.

A cordon was established as detectives worked to ascertain the circumstances of the tragedy. An 18-year-old has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving

Police have since arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are appealing to members of the public for information.

In a statement, GMP said: ‘Officers are now appealing to anyone who has any information that could assist the investigation to get in touch.

‘GMP is also keen to hear from anyone who may have relevant footage – including CCTV, mobile or dashcam.’

Forensic tents were set up at the junction on Saturday as scene of crime officers in white overalls worked to piece together what happened.

Local residents and public figures have since expressed their sympathy for the family of the teenager who died.

Councillor Michael Welton told the Manchester Evening News: ‘We’re deeply saddened by this collision and our hearts go out to the victim, the family and friends.

‘It’s just awful, one can only imagine what it’s like for the family and the person who found him.’

The incident came after a spate of violent incidents across Greater Manchester in recent days, including the shooting of a 16-year-old boy.
