A man and woman from West Virginia are in jail after cops allegedly found four children between the ages of 1 and 13 living in a home covered in “raw sewage,” trash and dirt.

Samantha Lynn Perkins, 34, and Daniel Scott Perkins, 56, are facing charges of child neglect causing bodily injury, according to court records. Daniel Perkins faces an additional charge of child abuse with a substantial risk of death or bodily injury.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by local media outlets, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office began investigating on May 18, when one of the kids, a 13-year-old boy, complained of child abuse at a home in Grant Town, which has a population of less than 700 people and is located about 20 miles southwest of Morgantown. When deputies arrived, they saw “bruises and blood” on the boy. Cops contacted Child Protective Services to investigate further.

When law enforcement entered the home, they reportedly found “trash scattered throughout the front of the residence with an eroded stairway leading to the front door.” There was also allegedly a “strong odor of raw sewage coming from the bathroom.” Cops walked into the bathroom where they reportedly discovered “raw sewage overflowing in the toilet and an infestation of flies.”

In a bedroom, there were three kids, including a 3-year-old with a feeding tube who appeared to be malnourished and was lying on a dirty mattress on the floor, the affidavit reportedly said.
