An Ohio mother is behind bars after her 9-month old child suffered broken bones, a black eye and “other unexplained injuries” — and she apparently ignored instructions to take the baby to the hospital.

The injuries happened over several days, showing this wasn’t just a single incident, according to cops. Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman said in a press release that his deputies responded to a call just before 6 p.m. Friday from Child Services and New Boston Police Department requesting assistance after paramedics took a 9-month-old baby to Southern Ohio Medical Center. The child was later transferred some 90 miles to the north to Nationwide Children’s Center in Columbus where there was a specialized team of child abuse doctors and staff.

Detectives went to the child’s home in the 3000 block of Rhodes Avenue in New Boston on Friday and interviewed the mother, 30-year-old Kayla Siearra Williams, and others. After receiving a report from doctors at the children’s hospital on Saturday, investigators took Williams into the sheriff’s office for further questioning.

Law enforcement determined the oldest injury was about 10 days old while the most recent one was from around four days prior to the interview, the press release said. Detectives also learned that Williams had taken the child to King’s Daughter Medical Center earlier on Friday and doctors told her to “take the child straight to Nationwide Hospital.”

But she never bothered to do so, authorities allege. When Williams didn’t show up, hospital staff contacted Children Services which sparked the investigation that led to Williams’ arrest, the press release says.
