Police Investigating Death of 3-Year-Old Tot on Christmas

A Wisconsin man who survived a shooting during an Uber ride is now dedicated to mentoring youth and driving change in his community amid a rise in carjackings.

Kevin Simmons, a volunteer minister and former Uber driver, picked up two passengers from the city’s northwest side after 2 a.m. in October when gunfire erupted, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The incident happened near 55th Street and Custer Avenue in Milwaukee.

The alleged shooter was identified as a 15-year-old teen.

Simmons told the outlet that he’s still recovering from gunshot wounds to his head, abdomen, and arm. His arm strength has significantly weakened; he has lost feeling in part of his jaw and is deaf in one ear.

The incident has also made walking difficult for him. He can no longer drive and refuses to enter an Uber.

Before the carjacking, Simmons worked in construction, volunteered as an assistant pastor, and supported families affected by violent crime.

“God didn’t save my life just to be sitting in this chair,” he said. “He saved my life for a reason, and I have to honor that reason.”

According to FOX News Digital, Simmons was known in the community as “Minister Kevin” and marched from Milwaukee to Washington, D.C., in 2020 to protest racial inequality and police brutality.

Despite his injuries from the shooting, he remains determined to help his community. This summer, he plans to referee youth basketball games and talk to young people about the importance of making smart and safe choices.

“Milwaukee is a tale of two cities,” he said. “You can’t just complain and do nothing.”

Meanwhile, the suspect is scheduled for a court hearing in June.
