Samurai sword used in fatal stabbing (KCAL/YouTube)
A California woman allegedly stabbed her wife to death and injured her mother-in-law with a samurai sword following an argument.
Weichien Huang, 44, is charged with murder and attempted murder, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said on Monday. Huang allegedly slashed her wife Fei Chen Chen with the katana sword on July 18 at their San Dimas home. Huang also allegedly stabbed her mother-in-law. Chen’s mother was able to wrestle the knife away from Huang before she was able to inflict any more harm, authorities said. The mother suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital.
Video posted by an onlooker and obtained by CW affiliate KTLA showed Huang had propped the sword on the back of a U-Haul on the street. When a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy pulled up in his cruiser, Huang picked up the knife and walked toward him. The deputy ordered her to drop the weapon. She let go of the sword and put her hands up. Huang then directed deputies to the home, where they found Chen and Chen’s mother, along with a third woman who was unharmed. First responders took Chen to the hospital, where she died. Chen’s mother remains in the hospital.
Huang was taken to the hospital and discharged on July 24. She’s currently at the Los Angeles County Jail without bond.
“We are deeply saddened by this horrific violence and our hearts go out to the victims’ loved ones and community,” Gascón said in a statement. “This tragic case demonstrates the insidious problem of domestic violence that affects many throughout our country. Our Bureau of Victim Services is readily available to assist the surviving victim during this time.”
Cops haven’t divulged a motive for the crime. Huang faces life in prison if convicted.
