A Purdue University student is in custody for the murder of his roommate early Wednesday morning.
Investigators have not provided the name of the suspect, but the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office identified the victim was 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda on Indianapolis.
The suspect called police about the killing at about 12:44 a.m., WANE reported.
A Purdue senior told the station that students living on the same floor in McCutcheon Hall were awaked by a “scream or some loud noises.”
An international student who lives in the dorm said that his parents in the United Arab Emirates broke the news to him.
“The least you could do to inform me as someone who lives in the [same] dorm as someone [who] got murdered a night ago, is send like an Amber Alert on my phone. I’d like to know about it,” said Jad Khalaf.

Tim Doty, director of media and public relations for the university, said they didn’t send an alert because the suspect made the 911 call and was taken into custody without problems.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels later sent out a statement.
“This is as tragic an event as we can imagine happening on our campus and our hearts and thoughts go out to all of those affected by this terrible event,” he wrote. “We do not have all the details yet. Our Purdue University Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation of this incident so that we all may learn more about what transpired.”
Police have not indicated a possible motive for the murder. An autopsy was scheduled for later on Wednesday.
