Long Island media outlet Newsday reports that suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is expected to be arraigned this week on a fifth murder.
Multiple sources told the outlet that Heuermann, 60, will be arraigned on the new charge on Thursday before State Supreme Court Justice Timothy Mazzei.
The new indictment follows some fresh searches in the area — including a new search of Heuermann’s Massapequa Park home in May, as CrimeOnline reported.
The sources would not be more specific about the charges Heuermann is reportedly facing, and Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney and defense attorney Michael J. Brown declined to comment, Newsday said.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the deaths of the so-called “Gilgo 4,” four women found dead and buried on a desolate stretch of Gilgo Beach in 2010. In all, 10 sets of remains were found in the area late that year and early 2011. Prosecutors say those four women — Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy — were all sex workers who had contact with a burner phone consistent with Heuermann’s locations before their disappearances.
In addition to the Manhattan architect’s home, investigators searched an area of Manorville on Long Island in April near where the remains of Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack were found in 2003 and 2000, respectively.
Tierney declined to say what the Manorville searches were about, but police sources told the New York Post that the search was related to the 1993 murder of Sandra Castilla, who was believed killed by another serial killer, John Bittrolff, as CrimeOnline reported.
Heuermann has been held without bond since his arrest last July.
