A police officer has been left seriously injured in hospital after a ‘stolen’ car allegedly reached speeds of 110mph in a police chase before ploughing head on into a police vehicle.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a car being stolen in Lancashire Hill, Stockport, at around 3.30am this morning.
GMP dispatched officers from its Roads Policing Unit to the scene, who became engaged in a pursuit with the driver of the car around ten minutes later.
The driver ran a series of red lights and reached speeds of up to 110mph in the moments before the collision, which saw them crash into a police vehicle responding to the incident and travelling in the opposite direction.
The incident occurred on Hyde Road, Gorton, at around 3:55am.
Both the police officer and male driver of the car were taken to hospital – the male police officer has serious injuries to his arms and legs.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, drug driving and taking a vehicle without consent. He remains in custody for questioning.
Hyde Road was closed both ways following the collision, and remains so today.
