Spit on Sidewalk Leads to Arrest in 36-Year-Old Cold Case Murder of Massachusetts Woman

A man  allegedly caught hitting and strangling a woman was shot by a Nevada off-duty police officer and his wife.

8 News Now reports that on Friday morning, in the 700 block of 6th Street in Boulder City, Nevada, the LVMPD received a call regarding a person found dead in the front yard of a home.

The off-duty officer saw the man “mounted” on top of a woman, punching and strangling her from a neighboring yard. The officer rushed to help the woman and instructed his wife to call the police before leaving.

“The off-duty officer went outside and observed a male mounted on top of a female, punching and strangling her at the same time,” said LVMPD Capt. Kurt McKenzie.

The officer was able to help the woman escape from her assailant safely. However, the assailant then followed the officer into his yard. The officer issued “numerous” warnings to the trespassing assailant, stating that he would shoot if the man did not stop. The man continued to advance, prompting the officer and his wife to fire their weapons.

“We heard four gunshots—boom, boom, boom, boom—and we turned around to see a guy standing outside with his hands up, everything like a gun in his hand,” said Boulder City High School student Colin Weyrauch, who heard the commotion, according to 3 News.

The man who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the shooters sustained any injuries.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department is handling the investigation and is treating this incident as an officer-involved shooting.
