No one has been charged with murder a year after a 25-year-old man died after one being punched just once on a night out in Preston, Lancashire.

Jack Jermy-Doyle was assaulted at the junction of Harris Street and Birley Street at about 2.40am on August 12 last year.

He was rushed to hospital where he sadly died two days later which resulted in Lancashire Police launching a murder investigation.

Following the incident, two men – aged 21 and 28 from Preston – were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding but were released on police bail while enquiries continued.

The force has said the men were re-arrested on August 24 on suspicion of murder, assault and Public Order Act offences but were since released on bail pending further enquiries.

‘Two men – aged 21 and 28 from Preston – previously arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding were re-arrested on August 24 on suspicion of murder, assault and Public Order Act offences. They have since been released on bail pending further enquiries,’ Lancashire Police told the Mirror.

‘Anyone with information which could assist our enquiries should call 101 quoting log 0161 of August 12, 2022.’

Mr Jermy-Doyle’s heartbroken partner Kaitlyn Booth told the paper that the people who were arrested were not known to either of them – adding that she believed the attack was unprovoked.

Ms Booth has now set up a fundraiser to mark a year since his death, as she prepares to take on a Tough Mudder on the anniversary of the serious assault. She is also highlighting that one punch attacks can kill.

Kaitlyn said: ‘On the 12th of August 2022, my beautiful Jack was punched and his whole life was taken from him. All it took was ONE punch. Jack had so much more to offer this world, but everything was cruelly taken away from him. The love of my life was gone in the blink of an eye.

‘On the 12th of August 2023, I will be doing Tough Mudder in memory of Jack, something that we wanted to do together but sadly never can. My goal for this page is to raise money for the charity One Punch UK but most importantly I want to raise awareness of the severity that one punch can do.

‘One Punch Can Kill.

‘This is in honour of Jack Jermy-Doyle and all of the other beautiful souls taken too soon from this extremely careless act.’

In a tribute Jack’s family said: ‘No words can describe the utter devastation we as a family are feeling. Jack was a funny, charismatic, amazing young man who had so much to offer this world and we are truly broken that he has been taken from us so soon. He will forever be in our hearts and thoughts.’
