A mystery has unfolded as five people were found dead along a remote desert road in California. 

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said that the bodies around 8.16pm on Tuesday after they responded to a welfare check off of Highway 395 in El Mirage.  

Police scanner reports revealed that the people were found near the intersection of Shadow Mountain Road and Lessing Avenue, Victor Valley News Group reported. 

Helicopters were on standby to assist at the scene but once authorities realized that the victims were all dead, they were called off. 

It is unclear how the victims died, but there have been reports that they were all shot as bullet holes were found in the back window of the gray mini van that was parked along the road.

Since the gruesome discovery, the area has been cornered off and access has been restricted as officials start their investigation. 

The identities of the victims have not been released and no arrests have been made, according to Fox 11. 

‘Investigators with our Specialized Investigations Division responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Further information will be released when available,’ the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told DailyMail.com

The bodies were found about 15 miles north of Adelanto and approximately 20 miles north of Victorville. 

On December 23, an ‘out-of-town’ family discovered a their relative’s dead body in a chest freezer in San Diego. 

The family alerted the San Diego Police Department who have initiated a death investigation with the homicide unit.

The person’s identity has not been made public, nor has the cause of death, but officials have said that the corpse is female.

‘It’s very surprising and scary and give me the chills because I’ve never heard something like this,’ neighbor Ana Marie Mierau told ABC San Diego.

‘I started seeing the police everywhere, and I’m like: “That is something big,”‘ another, Teresa Morrison, said.

‘Essentially, out-of-town family members were at a residence and located a dead body inside of a chest freezer. The body is believed to be female, but no other physical details such as age or race can be confirmed until an identification is made,’ the San Diego Police Department said in a statement.

The home in question is a three bedroom home spread across 1,300 square feet in the Allied Gardens section of San Diego. It is valued around $900,000.
