An urgent manhunt has been launched after a woman escaped an attacker on a popular bushwalking trail.

Police were called to the Cockatoo Trail at Mount Coot-tha, west of Brisbane, on Sunday morning after reports a man had attempted to sexually assault a 25-year-old woman.

The female hiker was pushed to the ground and held down, according to 9NEWS.

The attacker fled the scene on foot.

Police are conducting extensive patrols in the vicinity, searching bushland. 

The offender is still on the run and women in the area have been warned to stay vigilant.
