More than 250 men “from all countries” wrote to Gypsy Rose Blanchard while she served time in a Missouri prison, but only one man stood out enough to become her husband.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Blanchard was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center on December 28, after serving time for second-degree murder. According to Missouri state law, Blanchard qualified for early release after serving 85% of her sentence, which she completed.
Blanchard was convicted of murder for the June 2015 death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, who was found killed in their Springfield home. An autopsy report indicated that she had been stabbed 17 times.
Police said Blanchard didn’t stab her mother herself, but instead, orchestrated the murder while her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, carried out the grisly attack.
Now, Blanchard is speaking about her experience in the upcoming six-part documentary, The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, with interviews that took place before and after her prison release.
“My purpose for doing this documentary is really just to shed light on mental health awareness,” Blanchard told Entertainment Tonight.
“I want to share with others what I’ve been through because if somebody out there is watching this, they can see me and know that they’re not alone. Because when I was living with my mother, I felt very alone. I always say that if I had someone to tell me, ‘Hey, it’s safe to talk to someone and tell them that you’re struggling.
“Tell them that your home situation is bad. Tell them you’re being abused,’ I wouldn’t have committed my crime. So that’s why it’s important for me to share my story.”
As far as the hoards of men wanting to win her affection, Blanchard told ET that she married 37-year-old Ryan Anderson, a special education teacher, after learning he was from Louisiana, her home state. The connection started as a penpal friendship that eventually turned into marriage.
“Well, Ryan’s from Louisiana, and I’m originally from Louisiana. [When] I saw that, I’m kinda like, ‘Hey, someone from my home state,’ so I wrote him a letter back. We became friends and, of course, more than friends and then now we’re married.”
The couple is now focusing on their goals, including financial goals, how to live successfully as a married couple, and the possibility of eventually having children.
“We’re just trying to start off the marriage on a good foot before we bring kids into this situation right now,” Blanchard added.
The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard premieres will air Friday on Lifetime at 8 p.m. EST.
