Mom Will Stand Trial for Decapitating 6-Year-Old Son Alongside Family Dog

On Friday, a Missouri judge ruled a woman can be prosecuted for killing her 6-year-old son and dog in 2022.

Tasha Haefs was found competent to stand trial for decapitating her son, Karvel Stevens. Kansas City officers who performed a welfare check at Haefs’ home in February 2022 found blood trailing to the front door before looking through a window and seeing part of Stevens’ body in the home, according to KCTV.

Haefs was reportedly singing inside the house when police arrived. Officers eventually forced their way inside and discovered Stevens’ decapitated body and Haefs with blood on her legs and feet, KCTV reported.

A decapitated dog was discovered in the basement, according to reports. Haefs allegedly admitted to killing her son in a bathtub. Before the slaying, she allegedly experienced hallucinations, drug addiction, trauma, and depression.

The Kansas City Star reported that Haefs underwent treatment after being found unfit for trial in 2022. Last month, the state’s Department of Mental Health filed a mental-health report and notified the courts that Haefs is competent to stand trial.

An arraignment hearing is scheduled for April 29.
