A Michigan mother was driving the wrong way on Inkster Road early Saturday morning and crashed into another vehicle, killing her 3-year-old child who was a passenger.

The 29-year-old woman and five other children — ages 10, 7, 5, 18 months, and 8 months — were taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Farmington Hills police said the 3-year-old who was killed was not in a car seat or using other safety restraints at the time of the crash, according to WDIV.

The woman is in custody, according to investigators, who said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The other children were released into the custody of a grandparent.

Police said the woman was driving northbound in the southbound lane just after 2:30 a.m. when she crashed into a car driven by a 33-year-old Detroit man at the intersection of Inkster Road and 8 Mile Road. The Detroit man had been driving westbound on 8 Mile Road.

Police said he sought treatment at a hospital but didn’t require medical transport.

“This is an extremely tragic, yet avoidable incident,” Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King said. “This should serve as a stark reminder of the importance of utilizing restraint devices and the dangers of operating a vehicle while impaired.”

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case for charges.
