Mom of 3 Sent Peculiar Texts to Family Before She Was Found Dead in Parking Lot

A Georgia woman who disappeared late last month was found dead in a vehicle on Sunday in what authorities are investigating as a homicide.

WSB-TV reported that Shakema Toran, 36, was last seen at her Augusta home on July 31. Four days later, her body was discovered in a vehicle parked outside a Kroger in Decatur.

Toran was believed to be in a truck driven by Barritz Martin, 37, when she vanished. Martin, who was Toran’s boyfriend of two months, is currently wanted for questioning.

Reports indicated that Toran and Martin got into argument before her disappearance. Martin returned to the home to pick up Toran two hours after Toran’s mother asked him to leave, according to WRDW.

Toran’s mother said she has not heard from her daughter since getting texts that did not sound like her. Deputies repeatedly tried to call Martin, who eventually called back. Police asked to speak to Toran, but Martin was heard saying “wake up” before the call disconnected.

Martin was described as being 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing 160 pounds. He is possibly driving a white 2004 Ford F-250 with Georgia tag RJW1158.

Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 706-821-1020 or 706-821-1080.
