A 29-year-old mother in Texas has been arrested after she allegedly left her 3-year-old son alone in a car that was parked illegally and eventually towed while she went inside a club to drink.
Brandy Rachelle Brown was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of endangering a child, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Harris County District Court, officers with the Houston Police Department at about 12:25 a.m. on Monday responded to a call regarding an illegally parked car in the 2400 block of Wheeler Street. A local tow truck driver had towed Brown’s illegally parked car and later discovered a 3-year-old child sleeping in the backseat.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office explained that in this case, the tow truck driver towed Brown’s Acura down the block from where it was illegally parked before securing it, Houston Fox affiliate KRIV reported. This is reportedly a common practice for tow truck drivers because it reduces the number of confrontations with vehicle owners.
As the tow truck driver attempted to secure the vehicle, the driver reportedly realized that there was a sleeping child in the backseat and called 911.
Court documents state that Brown left the toddler “in [the] car asleep for at least 28 minutes while she went to a club.”
The criminal complaint further states that she left her child in “imminent danger” of physical and mental impairment by leaving him “unattended in an illegally parked car at night while going drinking at a nightclub during which the car was towed away with the child inside.”
Records show that Brown has previously been charged with multiple crimes, including driving while intoxicated and interfering with the duties of a public servant. She was convicted on the DUI charge and did not have a valid license at the time of her arrest.
KRIV reported that the toddler was evaluated by medical personnel and determined to be in good health. He has since been placed in the custody of a family member.
Brown was booked into the Harris County Jail and released after posting bond of $7,500, records show.
