A California mother and her 8-year-old son were hospitalized after they were shot by a suspect who rammed their car and fled the scene after the shooting.

City of Pittsburg police said that the shooting was domestic-violence related and that the mother was specifically targeted by the suspect, East County Today reported.

The mother was struck multiple times and was life-flighted to a nearby hospital. The boy was hit in the left shoulder. Both are now reported to be in stable condition.

Police said that the mother and son were on Civic Avenue in Pittsburg just after 9 p.m. Friday when the car driven by the suspect hit them. The driver fired multiple shots at the victims’ car, which became disabled. The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle.

Police interviewed witnesses and identified the suspect, who had a warrant out for his arrest for a previously incident. He is not yet in custody.
