A hit-and-run driver ploughed into a mom pushing a stroller in Brooklyn after blowing through a stop sign and hitting four young children who were getting off a school bus on Wednesday night. The 41-year-old mother was picking up her children just before 5pm when the driver smashed into a school bus on the corner of Avenue J and New York Avenue in Midwood, pinning her and the children under the wheels.

‘It was just terrible… the stroller was actually, you know, on the ground,’ witness Joanne Johnson told The New York Post. ‘[The mother] was crying probably thinking that she was going to die, thinking about her children of course. So it was very dramatic.’ Some of the children were stepping off the bus when the driver sped past the stop sign that marks an all-girls private school named Beth Jacob.

The youngest victim was a one-year-old, police said. Emergency responders took the mother, her eight and five-year-old kids, along with two others ages one and three, to an area hospital in stable condition. Johnson said she heard the car before it struck the children and mother. It was a White Mercedes, said the Brooklyn resident.

She heard the mother screaming ‘help me and my kids, my kids!’ as the car smashed into them. ‘Oh Jesus, you know, at that moment, you just have to pray because it’s scary,’ Johnson said. ‘It was so loud and tense.’

A neighbor’s security camera captured the incident, confirming the resident’s version of events. The police found the car on 24th Street and Glenwood Avenue, but it was empty. Witnesses told police a woman fled from the vehicle on foot, leaving behind a Mercedes emblem that broke off the car on Avenue J, reported CBS.

Of the five people hurt, three have already been released from the hospital, officers said. The rest are in hospital with bruising but are in a stable condition, expected to survive. No arrests have been made, with authorities still on the look out for the driver.
