Missing Veterinarian Found Dead in Lake Mead Weeks After He’s Filmed Beating Horse

A body discovered in a Nevada lake last week has been identified as a man who vanished earlier this month, officials said.

The National Park Service said Dr. Shawn Frehner’s body was found at the Boulder Islands at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area on April 18. KLAS reported that on April 7, Frehner’s truck was located at the park’s Hemmenway Harbor with his keys, phone, and wallet inside.

Frehner, 56, was reported missing by his father on April 6, a day before his truck was found. According to KLAS, Frehner’s father told police he last spoke to his son on April 6, when he mentioned difficulty with one of the horses.

A day after the body was found at Lake Mead, it was identified as Frehner via dental records.

Before his disappearance, a video reportedly surfaced on social media showing Frehner kicking a young horse, choking it with a lasso, and punching it in the face. Frehner apologized for the incident, claiming he was rough on the horse while he tried to reposition it so it could breathe and be anesthetized.

The Daily Mail reported that Frehner was facing felony animal abuse charges when he vanished. A cause of death has not been revealed.
