Missing Ohio Children Found in Iceland After Nearly 3 Month Search

Two children, reported missing from Ohio in October, have been found thousands of miles away — in Iceland.

The US Marshals Service said it worked with the Canton Police Department and the US Department of State to bring the children, ages 8 and 9, home earlier this month.

The saga began on October 25, 2024, when a family member reported the kids missing to Canton Police. The family member said the 34-year-old mother of the children had stopped taking her mental health medication and left her apartment, and the children were no longer attending school.

According to WEWS, the mother rented a car that was traced to several locations in the United States. A cell phone connected to her pinged in Syracuse, New York, a bank card was used in Oregon, and phone call was made from New Hampshire.

Marshals said they tracked the family to Denver, Colorado. But they hadn’t stayed there for long, and investigators soon learned they’d gone first to London and then to the island of Jersey in the English Channel.

From Jersey, they traveled to a remote fishing village in Iceland before Icelandic Police found them at a hotel in Reykjavik.

“The children were placed in the care of Iceland social services until a trusted family member could get them,” the marshals service said. “The mother was placed in a hospital where she will remain until she is well enough to travel back to the U.S.”

It’s not clear if she will face charges when she is returned.
