A missing New York college student was found dead this week, his body badly burned with a gunshot wound to the head.
DeAndre Matthews’ family reported him missing on Tuesday, and police found his badly burned body later that day on train tracks in Brooklyn. According the medical examiner, he had a gunshot wound to the head and suffered from smoke inhalation.
“I don’t even know what to say to the camera, but whoever the killer is, reveal yourself, because you’re gonna get caught,” Danielle Matthews, DeAndre’s mother, told WNBC on Friday. “I’m a hurt mother. I have my daughter but that was my son, that was my best friend. He made me a mother.”
Matthews’ sister, Dajanae Gillespie, said her brother left his job in Crown Heights at about 5 p.m. and went home, where he borrowed his mother’s Jeep for the night.
“I want to know why [the killer] did it. What was the reason? DeAndre wasn’t a violent person. This wasn’t for retaliation. He wasn’t in the streets,” Gillespie said, adding that she feared — because her brother was gay — that his death may be a hate crime.

Danielle Matthews tracked her Jeep down to a warehouse on Troy Avenue. It had also been burned.
The family said Matthews, a student a SUNY Broome Community College, wanted to be a social worker.
