Three months before his scheduled trial, a lawyer representing a California man accused of killing his still-missing wife will reportedly ask on Tuesday to be taken off the case.
KNSD reported that defense attorney Bonita Martinez no longer wants to represent Larry Millete, who is set to stand trial in January for the murder of his wife, Maya Millete. Maya Millete vanished from her Chula Vista home in January 2021, leading to her husband’s arrest the following October.
Maya Millete reportedly disappeared after video chatting with friends and getting into an argument with her husband. The missing woman’s sister said she disappeared the same day she scheduled an appointment with a divorce lawyer.
Prosecutors said Maya Millete strategized how she would serve her husband with divorce papers because she feared his reaction.

According to KNSD, Martinez previously represented Larry Millete in a custody case regarding his three children and the sale of his home. Though Larry Millete told the news outlet that he has already paid Martinez more than $200,000, the attorney said his case will cost approximately $500,000, which he cannot afford.
The San Diego County Public Defender Office has not yet confirmed whether it is on Larry Millete’s case.
