Gordon William Love (Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office)
A 39-year-old man in South Carolina was arrested this week after being accused of severely beating his own mother, allegedly using a pool cue to repeatedly strike the woman because she would not pay to have his court-ordered GPS ankle monitor removed. Gordon William Love was taken into custody on Monday and charged with one count of assault and battery of a “high and aggravated nature” over the alleged beating, authorities announced.
According to a press release from the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office, MCSO deputies on Sept. 26 responded to an emergency call at a residence located on Platt Road in the Tatum area of Marlboro County, which is approximately 160 miles north of Charleston. Deputies said the caller, who was Love’s sister, told the emergency dispatcher that “her brother was actively beating their mother.”
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies with the Uniformed Patrol Division located Love’s mother and his sister inside the home. Both witnesses allegedly corroborated that Love “did assault the victim by striking her in the head with a pool stick,” the sheriff’s office said.
The alleged assault was supposedly motivated by Love’s mother failing to pay for his ankle monitor to be removed while he was out on bond for charges stemming from a previous incident.
“Love then slammed the victim’s head, repeatedly, into a countertop within the residence,” the release states. “Deputies further learned that the assault stemmed from an argument involving the suspect, Gordon Love, becoming upset due to him being on GPS ankle monitor and demanding family members pay for it to be removed. Love fled the area of the assault prior to law enforcement’s arrival and deputies did obtain an arrest warrant for Love.”
Two weeks later, on Oct. 9, MCSO deputies were able to locate Love at a residence located in the Bennettsville area of Marlboro County where he was taken into custody over the Sept. 26 incident. Love on Tuesday appeared for a hearing at the Marlboro County Magistrate’s Office where a judge ordered that he be held without bond.

At the time of his arrest, authorities said that Love was already out on bond for failing to stop for a blue light and malicious damage to property.
Love was also arrested by MCSO deputies on April 30, 2023, and charged with criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping/abduction, and vandalism of property, according to a prior press release.
In that case, authorities said that Love and another man on April 29 “forcibly took” a woman from her residence “against her will,” causing damage to her property before sexually assaulting her. He was picked up the following day after attempting to flee from deputies with the MCSO Criminal Investigations Division and an additional count of failure to stop for blue lights was added to the litany of charges against Love.
“The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office takes crimes of sexual assault seriously and intend to seek justice for not only victims of sexual assault, but all victims in our County,” the sheriff’s office said following Love’s arrest in May. “We appreciate those involved in the reporting of this crime and as always, are grateful for the opportunity to serve.”
Court records also show that Love in January of this year was charged with one count of third-degree assault and battery. The circumstances leading to those charges were not immediately clear, but Love has pleaded not guilty to the charge and requested a trial by jury in May 2023.
MCSO did not immediately respond to a message from Law&Crime seeking additional details regarding Love’s arrests.
