July 31: Flagler County School Board Candidate Debate 2024: A one-hour live-streamed debate is scheduled for 5 p.m. on July 31 at Flagler News Weekly’s Facebook page, and is moderated by Flagler Parent’s Carmen Stanford and FNW’s Danielle Anderson. At least while on script. Very un-Trumpy. He almost seemed humbled by being shot. Can it endure? This is Trump. Of course it can’t. It didn’t even last one-fifth of his speech. Humility is for losers in the Trumpverse. So enjoy it while it lasts. Or lasted, since it’s already over. […] All political conventions are cringe-worthy idolatry fests. But even by those low standards, there was so much abject Trump flattery going on among his cultish speakers that if this had been Kim Jong-un’s convention, he’d have told his propagandists, “Hey, fellas, dial it back a little.” Zeynep Tufekci, Times columnist: “Great evening for golf and professional wrestling! My bet is that J.D. has no clue about this history of rising equality set closer to his actual home. Given his penchant for sudden adaptability we may now see his political ads embracing Moses. Or maybe not, out of fear that his most radical base may find it upsetting. If he decides to ignore this source of coalfield pride it will seem that he’s no more a student of Ohio than he is of the Kentucky mountains he visited as a youth. It will also be interesting during his senate campaign to see how J.D. pivots away from the damage he caused mountain people and regional pride with his degrading book and the over-the-top insulting movie that emanated from it. All I can think about regarding that disaster of a picture show, which our Mayberry mountain homie, Opie, shamelessly produced, is that Glenn Close must have had a mortgage payment overdue. Or, if J.D. is too busy flip-flopping to debate with a real mountaineer, maybe we can skip the talk shows and simply sit down and map out how to keep our kids and grandkids in the mountains they love, with a little less poverty on the side please.
