Locals in Motherwell are ‘living in fear’ amid an apparent rise in violent crime after burnt humans remains were found.

A burned body was discovered on a football pitch in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, at around 9am yesterday morning.

Police officers sealed off the area and a white tent was erected on the football pitch at the scene. It is understood the area is known locally as the ‘Muirhead pitches’.

Now, an anxious mother who lives close to where the remains were found, has said she is looking for a new place to live after a rise in violence in the area.

She claimed both of her children had been targeted by criminals in the last year.

Speaking anonymously to the Daily Record, she said: ‘We are very worried. In April someone set fire to my daughter’s car outside our home for no apparent reason – and now this has happened we want to move away from here. It’s very scary.

‘We thought this was a nice area but we no longer want to live here.

She told the Daily Record that her son was attacked by a group of men while travelling home a few months ago and that ‘ the violence is getting worse’ in the area.

MailOnline understands the gender of the person whose body was burned is currently unknown to police.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ‘Around 9am on Saturday, 24 February, 2024 a body was discovered in the Margaret Drive area of Motherwell.

‘Officers are at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.’

The mother told the Daily Record that nobody in the local area knows what happened and that it was a dog walker who found the body yesterday morning.

Local MP Marion Fellows said it was a ‘tragic’ and ‘shocking’ incident, but there is no reason to suspect there is any ‘danger to the local community’.
