Killer Son Shoots Dad ‘Execution Style’ at Hunting Cabin

A Minnesota man is accused of bursting into a hunting cabin and gunning down his 62-year-old father as he had dinner with friends and relataives.

Kirk Edward Hazlett III, 31, was charged with two counts of second degree murder, two counts of kidnapping, and one count of first degree burglary in the death of Kirk Edward Hazlett II, according to KTSP.

A criminal complaint against the younger Hazlett says that Pine County deputies were called to the remote cabin, at the end a 1 1/2 mile dirt road, at about 8;45 p.m. on Friday. The caller lived in a cabin next door to the one where the shooting took place, and he said that two men had come to his house and told him that the son had shot his father.

When police arrived, the two men — one of them the elder Hazlett’s brother — took them next door, where they found the dead man on the floor, Law&Crime said.

The uncle told police that the three men were finishing up dinner when a security camera alerted them to someone entering the property with a gun, KSTP reported. He said he went to get his own gun, but before he could return, he heard three gunshots.

Once he got back into the room, the killer was standing in the cabin holding the gun, with his father on the ground still breathing. The younger man had his uncle and the other man sit on the couch while he shot his father in the head to make sure he was dead. Then he took the other two men’s cell phones and let them leave.

The uncle said that Hazlett and his father “weren’t getting along and hadn’t for a very long time” and that the murderer was “not in good relations with their family.”

The other man told police that the gunman “entered with a mission … he entered to kill” his father and that he shot him “execution style.”

Hazlett was arrested less than an hour later when he called police in Isanti County and said his girlfriend was making suicidal comments. He was found about 8 miles from the murder scene.

The court documents also say that police were called to the cabin about a month ago when the killer was drinking and threatening his father.

The elder Hazlett was shot nine times, according to an autopsy.

The killer is being held on a $3 million bond, Law&Crime said.
