A Kenyan man wanted for the murder of his girlfriend in Massachusetts has been extradited to the United States.

Kenya Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga said that Kevin Kangethe left Nairobi on Sunday on his return to Boston, The Associated Press reported.

“I wish to reiterate my commitment and support, whenever needed, to the United States of America, and in particular the prosecution team as they proceed with the next phase of the case,” Ingonga said Monday.

Kengethe’s girlfriend, home health care aide Margaret Mbitu, was found dead on November 1, 2023, in Kengethe’s car at Boston’s Logan International Airport, where Kengethe had taken a flight to Kenya, as CrimeOnline reported. He was arrested at a Nairobi nightclub on January 30 but dramatically escaped police custody a week later.

He was rearrested another week later and disciplinary action was taken against four police officers who had been on duty when he escaped.

Mbitu was last seen alive on October 30 leaving her job in Halifax, Massachusetts. She reportedly traveled from there with Kengethe to his home in Lowell.

Kengethe, who has renounced his US citizenship, was indicted for Mbitu’s murder in February.
