The suspect, Jonathan Jones, was found in Mexico earlier this week with the 17-year-old girl he allegedly kidnapped after skipping out on a court date. Police say there is a connection.
Police in Ohio have arrested a juvenile in connection with the death of a woman whose son was recently arrested in Mexico after he allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl and took her out of the country.
Sylvania Township Police announced on Thursday that Nicole Jones, 53, was missing and may have been harmed, WTVG said. That announcement came just days after US Marshals said that 33-year-old Jonathan Jones, her son, had been taken into custody in Mexico and that missing teenager Kaitlyn Coones, 17, had been recovered, according to the Canton Repository.
Jones pleaded guilty in March to pandering obscene material and child endangerment and had been expected in court for sentencing on May 4. Coones was reported missing from Canton on April 18, and a bench warrant was issued for Jones’ arrest on April 21 for violating the conditions of his electronic monitoring program. When he missed his May 4 court date, investigators put out a nationwide alert.
The two were last seen on May 5 in Cochise County, Arizona, driving a Buick Encore registered to Nicole Jones, WTVG. On that same day, Canton police asked Sylvania Township police to check on the mother.
Sylvania police did not release name of the suspect they’d arrested but said charges of aggravated murder and tampering with evidence were filed in Lucas County Juvenile Court, WTVG reported. Deputy Police Chief Jim Rettig previously said there was a connection between Nicole Jones’s disappearance and her son’s absconding with Coones, but police have not explained that connection.

They also said charges were expected to be filed against additional people.
Nicole Jones’ body has not been found.
It’s not clear if Jonathan Jones has been returned to Ohio.
