A man wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing in London has been arrested in Italy after seven months on the run.

Vittorio Murro, 25, was held after leaving the country following the murder of Jordan Briscoe in Tottenham.

Detectives are investigating how he managed to slip out of the country and travel through France before being held in a routine spot check by police outside Rome.

It was only after his details were passed through databases as part of the routine stop that it emerged Mr Murro was wanted in connection with the murder that happened in March.

Italian-born Mr Murro was travelling on a German passport when he was stopped by police at a small beach resort just outside Rome.

Scotland Yard officers investigating the murder are thought to have identified him through CCTV footage from the crime scene and a warrant for his arrest was issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court in June.

An Italian police source told MailOnline: ‘He was stopped as part of a routine patrol and asked to show his documents. When colleagues checked his name it emerged he was wanted for murder and he was arrested and taken into custody.

‘He will remain in prison until the extradition hearing is set and he will then be returned to London. He told us that he was in the area to see his father who hadn’t been in touch with for years.

‘We informed his father of the arrest and the circumstances, and he had no idea – he just said that he had received a call and was expecting to see his son for the first time in years.’

Four people have already been charged in connection with the murder and robbery of Mr Briscoe, 25, and are currently awaiting trial.

They are Jabir Sitar, 20, from Walthamstow, a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, Jahoe Allen, 32, of no fixed abode and Karl Black, 42, also from Walthamstow.

Mr Briscoe was found with stab wounds in Arnold Road on March 5. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital where he later died that night.
