Police in Houston, Texas, are searching for a 29-year-old man after he allegedly fatally stabbed his brother in the neck with a curved foot-long sword, authorities said Monday.
Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson described the weapon to NBC affiliate KRPC as a “pirate sword.”
Officers responded to a stabbing call on the city’s southeast side shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday. When they arrived, they found Robert Payne Stewart suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to the hospital and died about 40 minutes later.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, witnesses quickly identified the suspect as Stewart’s brother, Cory Madison Kellett. Stewart’s roommate told police that he was sleeping when Stewart frantically awakened him to say that his brother was outside.
“My brother is outside, and he is not playing,” Stewart told his roommate, according to the affidavit.
The roommate walked outside and saw Kellett talking with a neighbor. Stewart asked his brother, “You think you are cool, coming into my neighborhood with a knife?”
That’s when Kellett pulled a large knife from a holster and pointed it toward Stewart, the affidavit said. Kellett started walking toward the roommate while punching the knife in the air as the roommate ran toward the house in fear for his safety, detectives said.
A neighbor said he heard a slap or a punch and heard Stewart tell his brother, “Yeah, I popped your a–. Try something with my friend,” the affidavit said. Stewart also said he was not going to let Kellett in his home.

Stewart ran toward the house to prevent his brother from getting inside when Kellett slashed his neck, according to the affidavit.
“He stabbed me! He stabbed me!” Stewart said with blood pouring out of his neck, the roommate told detectives.
Kellett got into his Alfa Romeo sports car and drove away, the affidavit said.
The neighbor later told detectives that Kellett said he was there to check the mail and was kicked out of the home, making him homeless. The neighbor also said that Stewart told him that Kellett stabbed him about a month earlier, which led to him kicking his brother out of the home.
On Friday, Kellett’s ex-girlfriend forwarded an Aug. 7 Facebook post featuring photos of his car and knife with a caption, “New bday swords,” according to the affidavit.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant on charges of murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Anyone with information on Kellett’s whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or speak anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
