Neighbor of Accused Gilgo Beach Killer: ‘The Guy’s Been Quiet’

Handcuff keys were among the items found Long Island serial killer suspect Rex Heuermann’s Massapequa Park home during the extensive and days-long search of the property after his arrest a week ago.

The British tabloid the Daily Mail enlarged a photo of notes carried by a forensic investigator to learn a few of the items, and where in the house they were found:

  • Ropes in vault
    Ropes in shop
  • Tile w/ QS on shelf in workshop
  • Torn man’s shirt (size of ∆) w/stain in bag, in closet, in workshop
  • Keys and handcuff keys in shelf under workbench in workshop

The notes were handwritten and torn from a small, spiral-bound notebook. They were captured by a Daily Mail photographer from a considerable distance. While there’s nothing in the notes to confirm that the items were found at Heuermann’s home and not at two storage units searched since the arrest — and police did not comment on the notes — the references to “workshop” would indicate the location was the home.

Previously, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said that investigators found between 200 and 300 guns on Heuermann’s property, far more than the 92 he had permits for, CrimeOnline reported.

Heuermann, 59, was taken into custody last Thursday in New York City and charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He is the prime suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes. The four are collectively known as the Gilgo 4, all found dead and wrapped in burlap on Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago.

He has pleaded not guilty.
