Florida police have charged a woman whose elderly father was reportedly hospitalized last month for various injuries that are consistent with neglect.
Pamela Reynolds called 911 on July 31, claiming her father had a high heart rate. The man was taken to the hospital, where a nurse said he had necrotic tissue on his right hip that was filled with maggots and feces, according to WALA.
The nurse determined the man’s injuries were possibly the result of lying in the same position for months. While Reynolds allegedly told Escambia County police that she bathed her father and changed his diapers daily, she also said she had not moved him since June due to transportation issues.
WALA reported that Reynolds’ father has diabetes, heart failure, and hearing issues. Reynolds allegedly said her father had not seen a doctor since January.
Reynolds’ father told police that he could smell his rotting flesh, but he could not move because his legs — which were brown and discolored — were curled up. An officer said the man had a large injury on his right hip that was pus-filled, bruised, and peeling, according to WALA.
Reynolds claimed she gave her father food and medicine every day, but police said he appeared malnourished. Officers also alleged he had feces in his beard and fingernails.
According to WALA, Reynolds said she was unaware of her father’s extensive injuries.
Reynolds, who is charged with elderly neglect, remains jailed without bond. She is due in court on August 22.
