Georgia Parents Arrested After 8-Month-Old Daughter Dies, Caught Between Mattress and Couch Cushions

A Georgia couple awas arrested this week and charged with murder in the death of their 8-month-old daughter.

Columbus Police began an investigation in late September after they were called about a deceased child, WTVM reported. They found the infant had been placed on a mattress on a love seat and rolled off, becoming wedged between the mattress and couch cushions.

Miguel Badillo, 24, and Kiara Davis, 27, were arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree murder, second-degree child cruelty, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Detectives said Davis put the baby down for a nap and then stepped outside to talk with a friend. An autopsy said the baby died from asphyxiation.

Investigators found the home in deplorable condition, with unconfined animals, animal feces, insects, and “half-eaten food that was decaying in every room of the house.”

Badillo was not home when the incident took place, leading friends to question the charges against him. But investigators said that both parents knew about the child’s sleeping arraongements “and both parents were aware of conditions in the household.”

Their cases were bound over to Superior Court on Friday, and they were ordered held without bond.
