Georgia Man Guns Down Wife, Girlfriend Before Killing Himself

Police in north Georgia are investigating what they say is a double murder-suicide that saw a 37-year-old man gun down his wife and girlfriend before killing himself.

Dalton Police said they were called to an apartment just before 6 p.m. on Friday to check on the welfare of a woman who coworkers reported they hadn’t seen in several days. When they got no answer at the door, apartment staff let them and found Rebeca Nicole Akins, 35, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Detectives investigating the case found surveillance video showing a suspect leaving the apartment at about 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

Later on Friday evening, the tracked a vehicle belonging to the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Kevin Andrew Akins, to the parking lot of another apartment complex. They applied for a search warrant for a unit in the complex belonging to 33-year-old Cindel Mae Rhoden, but while they were waiting, Rhoden’s father arrived with a key. He said he had not heard from his daughter in several days.

He entered the apartment and found Rhoden and a man — later identified as Kevin Akins — shot to death.

Police quickly determined that Akins had shot Rhoden to death before killing himself.

Rhoden was the mother of two young girls and was pregnant with her third child at the time of her death, WANF reported.

Investigators have not speculated on a motive for the murders.
