The onetime founding member of a California rock band with a cult following went a from person of interest in the early December disappearance of his girlfriend to a homicide suspect on Tuesday after a body was found in a wooded area of Berkeley’s Tilden Regional Park.
Although DNA testing has not yet confirmed that the human remains belong to 61-year-old Capitola resident Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann, 54-year-old Theobald “Theo” Brooks Lengyel, a.k.a. Mylo Stone of El Cerrito, was arrested pursuant to a homicide warrant and jailed in Santa Cruz County.
According to the Capitola Police Department, Lengyel’s arrest took place after it “became clear that foul play was involved” in the disappearance and presumed death of Herrmann, who was last seen alive on Dec. 3, 2023. An investigation began nine days later.
Lengyel, a keyboardist, saxophonist, clarinet player, and founding member of the West Coast experimental rock band Mr. Bungle from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, was allegedly “uncooperative” in the earlier stages of the missing person investigation, when he was considered the “primary person of interest.”

Now the rocker is the prime suspect.
“Detectives from the Capitola Police Department gathered evidence, conducted interviews, and collaborated with partner agencies to piece together the circumstances surrounding Alice Kamakaokalani’s disappearance,” cops said. “As the investigation progressed, it became clear that foul play was involved, leading to the identification of Theobald Lengyel as a suspect.”
Authorities revealed Tuesday that their efforts, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, led investigators to “recover human remains” in Tilden Regional Park.
“The diligent work of our investigators, in coordination with our law enforcement partners, has led to the apprehension of Thoebald Lengyel in connection with the tragic homicide of Alice Kamakaokalani,” cops said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.”
